Sania to play Molik at Hobart opening round
[Sun Jan 10, 2010]After crashing out from the second round of her year's first tournament, ASB Classic in Auckland last week, Sania next aims at Moorilla Hobart International. For the first round of the event, the world no. 57 will meet Alicia Molik of Australia. Molik also had gone through the second round loss at her first tournament of 2010, the Brisbane International. Interestingly, Molik too had lost the match with 6-0, 6-3 like Mirza did. However, she had to face the former US Open champion, Kim Clijsters.
If Sania manages to surpass her first hurdle, she might meet another Australian Jelena Dokic in the quarterfinals. This is the last tournament of Sania Mirza before year's first Grand Slam- Australian Open kicks-off from January 18.
Moorilla Hobart International will be tricky business this year as about 17 players are from the world top-30 list, ensuring some interesting match ups for tennis fans.
"With 17 of the world's top 50 women in the field, not including Molik or Dokic, we were always going to see some fantastic matches at the Moorilla Hobart International this year," said Michael Roberts, Director of the tournament.
"With three former champions in the final round of qualifying, all with a chance of making the main draw, the field has the potential to get even stronger tomorrow and provide some interesting opponents for the players who have drawn qualifiers," he added.
The matches are taking place at the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart.
